AI made output cheaper. It made judgment more valuable.

AI can generate fifty directions before lunch. The interesting work starts when you delete forty-nine.

The designer’s value is moving away from producing every visible artifact and toward making the decisions underneath it: what deserves to exist, what should stay human, where complexity should live, and what will remain coherent after the next fifty features.

Craft is no longer measured by how much we can make. It is the ability to see the whole system, choose deliberately, and explain why one direction earns the right to survive.

The work is not producing more. It is seeing more clearly.

Complexity has to live somewhere

Simple interfaces are rarely simple systems.

When a financial product feels calm, it is tempting to credit restraint alone. But calm is usually the result of complexity being carefully relocated—not erased.

Permissions, compliance, operations, approval chains, failed transactions, and edge cases still exist. Product design decides who carries each burden, when it becomes visible, and whether the system can absorb it without making every user learn the machinery behind it.

The strongest simplification work is architectural. It protects the user from unnecessary decisions while keeping the organization honest about the decisions that still need to be made.

A product feels simple when its complexity has been given the right home.

Speed is a decision, not a pace

Startups rarely suffer from too few ideas. They suffer from treating every idea like it deserves Tuesday.

Moving quickly is useful only when the team shares an understanding of what matters now. Without that judgment, speed becomes a blur of half-finished bets, hidden dependencies, and shortcuts that quietly turn expensive.

At startup scale, prioritization is part of the design craft. The designer has to know what needs proof, what can wait, where fidelity creates confidence, and where it only creates delay.

Real speed is not compressing every task. It is reducing the number of things competing for attention so the important work can move without friction.

The fastest teams are not doing everything faster. They are doing fewer things on purpose.

Design operations

Good design changes with context

A process that protects one team can suffocate another.

NASA, BMW, McDonald’s, a fintech startup, and an early product team do not need the same design process. Rigor matters, but rigor is not the same as ritual.

Context determines where the risk lives. Sometimes it is inconsistency. Sometimes it is compliance, speed, trust, technical debt, or a team making decisions without enough shared language.

DesignOps works when it responds to those conditions. The goal is not to make every team look professional in the same way. It is to build the smallest system that helps this team make better decisions repeatedly.

A good process is designed for the conditions in front of it.

Art, identity & belonging

Function alone can still mean nothing

People rarely describe connection in positioning language.

They take a photo. Bring a friend. Buy it as a gift. Ask when the next one is. Meaning shows up through behavior before people find the language to explain it.

Art and community work taught me that identity, beauty, story, and belonging are not decoration added after the system functions. They shape whether someone cares enough to enter the system at all.

Analytics can tell us what happened. They are less reliable at explaining why something became part of a person’s sense of self. Product design needs room for both forms of evidence.

Function earns use. Meaning earns a place in someone’s life.
